"Hello! My name is Joey Nabor. A little bit about me: I graduated from UC Davis with two BAs in English Literature and Spanish Literature. During university, I spent a semester abroad at UNAM in Mexico City, traveling extensively from places as disparate as the remote highlands of Cuetzalan, Puebla to the Caribbean waters of Cancún, Quintana Roo. While abroad at UNAM, I did an internship in el Senado de la República, Mexico's Senate, providing me with greater professional and life experience. SAS helped make these achievements thinkable and possible for me. Through SAS, I found indispensable mentors like Ms. Romero and Mr. Murchie, visited Yosemite National Park, and grew as a person, allowing me to realize my full potential."

From Garfield High School faculty member and SAS parent Fabián Ramírez:

My name is Fabián Ramírez and I am a Spanish teacher here at Garfield High School. My son is a student at Garfield and is currently enrolled in the School for Advanced Studies (SAS) program. As a teacher, I am proud to have my son attend the same school where I work. I see the strong work ethic of his teachers and their dedication. As a parent, I can say that my son has already benefited greatly from this program, he enjoys it and finds it challenging and beneficial. SAS is a rigorous program that will challenge you, but at the same time creates a welcoming environment. The students and teachers form a close-knit community that provides the necessary support to succeed. SAS is a transformative and fun program that I, as a parent and teacher, recommend to everyone who wants to challenge themselves in their studies.

Mi nombre es Fabián Ramírez y soy profesor de español aquí en la preparatoria Garfield. Mi hijo es estudiante en Garfield y está inscrito en el programa de la Escuela de Estudios Avanzados, conocido por sus siglas en inglés SAS. Como profesor, estoy orgulloso de que mi hijo asista a la misma escuela donde trabajo. Sus profesores tienen una gran ética de trabajo y dedicación. Como padre, puedo decir que mi hijo ya le ha sacado mucho provecho al programa, lo disfruta y lo encuentra desafiante y beneficioso. SAS es un programa riguroso y desafiante, pero al mismo tiempo crea un ambiente acogedor. Los estudiantes y los profesores forman una comunidad unida que brinda el apoyo necesario para tener éxito. SAS es un programa transformativo y divertido que, como padre y profesor, recomiendo a todos los que quieran retarse en sus estudios.

"Me llamo María Soto y he trabajado como profesora en la Preparatoria James A. Garfield, por más de 20 años y he sido parte del programa de SAS por 10 años. Es muy gratificante y un reto profesional el poder colaborar con alumnos superdotados y talentosos académicamente. El reto profesional se debe a la curiosidad intelectual de los estudiantes de SAS por lo inquisitivos, elocuentes y competitivos que son entre ellos mismos. Por eso, los profesores de SAS tienen que capacitarse regularmente en diversas técnicas pedagógicas para poder comprender y educar a los alumnos de una manera efectiva.

A través de los años he visto a varios de nuestros alumnos de SAS sobresalir exitosamente tanto en la preparatoria como en la universidad y después en su carrera profesional. Todavía me mantengo en comunicación con varios de los estudiantes y es muy bonito celebrar sus triunfos, logros y prosperidad porque yo siento que de alguna forma he contribuido en su éxito. También quiero agregar que no sólo soy una profesora de SAS, sino una madre muy orgullosa de dos alumnos graduados de SAS: Adrián Olivas quien se graduó en el año del 2015 y de Ángel Olivas graduado en junio del 2019. Decidí matricular a mis hijos en el programa de alumnos superdotados y talentosos de SAS porque éste provee las herramientas y destrezas necesarias no sólo para graduarse de la preparatoria, sino para cumplir y superar los requisitos universitarios para las universidades federales, privadas y de prestigio.

Adrián al ingresar a la Universidad UC Santa Bárbara llevaba 5 clases de AP o Universitarias como la sabiduría y amor por el estudio que los profesores de SAS le inculcaron, todo esto contribuyó a que obtuviera dos licenciaturas en 4 años. Es licenciado en filosofía y ética como en estudios lingüísticos en español. Ángel por su parte tomó 9 clases de AP o universitarias y pasó todas satisfactoriamente. Hoy en día, él asiste a la Universidad UC San Diego y está especializándose en ciencia cognitiva y ciencia comunicativa para obtener dos licenciaturas. Por lo tanto, invito a alumnos y padres de familia a que formen parte del programa y familia de SAS de James A. Garfield High para celebrar juntos su éxito, logros académicos y profesionales.

My name is María D. Soto and I have been an educator at James A. Garfield High School for over 20 years, and a SAS teacher for 10 years. It is very rewarding and challenging to work with gifted and talented students. SAS students are inquisitive, eloquent, and competitive among themselves, and, due to their intellectual curiosity, they can be a challenge for educators. Because of this, SAS teachers are mandated to be trained continuously on differentiated instruction to be effective and understanding teachers for all students.

I have seen many SAS students become successful in high school, college, and careers. I still keep in touch with many of them, and I am delighted to celebrate their success and prosperity because I am part of it. I am not only an SAS educator and mentor, but the proud mother of two SAS graduated students, Adrián Olivas class of 2015 and Ángel Olivas class of 2019. I enrolled my sons in the Gifted and Talented program SAS because it provides the students with the proper educational skills and tools, not only to graduate from high school but to meet the rigorous university requirements for prestigious public and private universities.

My oldest son Adrián graduated from UC Santa Bárbara in four years with a double major. This was possible because he passed 5 AP Classes in high school and had inspiring SAS instructors. Ángel passed 9 AP classes and is attending UC San Diego, where he is majoring in Cognitive Science and Communications. As a parent and educator, I encourage you to become part of our SAS program at James A. Garfield High School because it will guide you to your academic and professional success."
