hello incoming students I miss Sanchez I'm the magnet coordinator I made this video for students and parents who were unable to attend the welcome meeting on May 18th so I'm going to cover most information on some of the guests that were present at the original meeting I won't be included in this presentation of but you will meet those people when you attend in the fall the main reason I hope did this meeting was for you to meet staff learn about the Freshman academic plan and so you could also prepare yourself and plan out your freshman year as well I'm the Magna Carta Peter and counselor I've been doing I have been this I've been in this role since 2014 and for next year I will just be the magnet Council and our new coordinator will be Miss wind currently miss when is one of our teachers she has taught math as well as our computer science elective classes our system Google is Mr Lopez and someone that all parents should know is Miss Marquez she is our parent Center rep and a wonderful resource and encourage students to know all of our names as well as parents we all you know our area of expertise but all of us are here to support students and parents you know in addition to that what I want you to know his I did serve them both of these roles and Emperor did the coordinator right now both of us will support student while the coordinator supports opportunities you know of enrichment and growth or the whole magnet program and I am more sauce counselor here to support students with academic emotional and social resources more specifically make sure you graduate by the set time and make sure that you have a that you can College by your senior year and fireman and you can submit an application that you're proud of and see where you get in now I know there's some information that a lot of students may ask and I don't have that information it's to be announced what I wanna recommend is that you have your check into the school Instagram as well as the magnet Instagram that I have here on this page we don't have the Oreo Haitian day nor do we know exactly what next year is going to look like we're still waiting for the district to decide on those details because it impacts how we can disperse that information so I can check out the school cite the magnet the official School magnet Instagram as well as the official School Instagram account now I mailed out information to parents and emailed them it's best to have that information change that your students current Middle School however is changes are made over the summer you're going to call the attendance office and ask them how you can come to campus is the method documents that you are at a new address okay but contact the office first now one of the first things I wish to address is our King our theme in our magnet program is computer science 3 magnet with in LAUSD has a theme and every school district gets to decide how will they Implement that be we implement the theme through computer science elective course and what I like to let students and parents know is some of our students coming in they have a Clear Vision they know I want to learn to code I want to go into you know a career in cyber security or computer programming and then we have students died just understand the great benefits it is to have the skill but they're not necessarily going to major in computer science but they understand that having these computer still learning the language of computers will build their critical thinking skills as well as give them exposure to a field that has quite a demand now all fresh are said to be scheduled in exploring computer science this class is just that is an exploratory class there is no expertise required for this class I know sometimes a student you know when they hear about a class to get a little nervous that they won't have the skills to succeed in it but it is an intro level course and they explore various topics of computer science at a superficial love also that you can slowly learn the material and every course after that build on that Foundation that you know first exploratory Foundation from that class okay that we have that we try to integrate over the four years that you are in the magnet program now I emailed as well as mailed a copy of what a student schedule looks like if you who did not receive one you can email me and request one and I have my email address at the end of this presentation what I mailed was just an example I want to let you guys all know what a sketch looks like so when you receive one at orientation you have a little bit of you no understanding of what you're looking at because our schedule is very different than what you are accustomed to okay what I you don't know is when we create a schedule we are looking at number one does the student have the necessary graduation requirement or the requirements for that grade level to have a make sure that if a student has an end of it a plan that I have placed them in the courses that will support the IEP is the theme in there as well and have I you know make sure that I am following the requirements of the magnet program you know did I take into consideration the classes they had you know in 8th grade specifically what math were you in 8th grade and what was your final grade to make sure you are placed in the appropriate math class following year these are the course titles that you are going to see in the first semester of your freshman year now the reason I have a journalism when it crossed out because I wanted to let you know in that sample schedule I sent you it said journalism but it's actually going to be women in literature these all over one that per semester you will have the opportunity to 40 credits okay in that first semester and these are all the course title that you will see or English for Matthew would either see you would either be placed in algebra for geometry not both of them it depends on what math course you finished with in 8th grade root science you'll see genetics and then you'll see biology you'll see PE and the explain computer science class I just mention now this is an example of what I emailed and mailed home as you can see on the left here where it says. It looks very different holes what you may have seen in middle school maybe Middle School you saw one two three four five six and here you see 268 11 13 14 and that doesn't necessarily follow you know a a numbering system that makes sense so I'm going to explain this unique schedule I mean explain it again at orientation I will explain it again you know if you need to do you know how specific question you can give me a call it does take a while to learn the schedule essentially when you see a course with a single number that is a class that meets every other day and when you see a class that is a two digit number is a class that meets every day okay so you will see the. That you go to that class the course name and the teacher on the next flight I'll go a little bit more into deep so as I mentioned quarter classes meet every day and those are the classes that you sought a two digit number next to they have classes they have the grades are submitted every 10 weeks for the class you are in these classes every day to increase instruction and Core Curriculum and improve essential skills your every other day classes they need Monday and every other day and that fine grade is submitted at the end of the semester okay so this is this is how a whole semester looks but what I want you to just focus on is the left side where you see the yellow highlights when you first attend this is what a day would look like if your schedule said 11 on there then that is your. Your first. Okay. You would attend Haley so this student if they saw lavendaire 1 and 5. Which is the first. Every day would be there Algebra 1 tutorial class which would end October 8th 2021 Russell will be the end of the first quarter you would have exploring computer science you know one day and on the other day he would have PE then you have lunch and then you would report to genetics which is here you see it's 13 that represents. 3 + 7 then the student would last report to their. 14 which is also known as. 4 + 8 and that would be women in literature all these three classes as you can see that are highlighted in yellow are 10 Wii horses they stay with his teacher the whole year but the grade is finally for this course title at the 10-week Mark now I know you have to be so complicated and there's no one's trying to make it complicated it's simply just that the system we use to schedule was you no understand most high school schedules of periods 1 through 8 or 1 through 7 you know or just simply blocked but we have block. and we have every other day. Which is why in order for it to for all the courses to show on a schedule they have to have a different number system okay by the End by that end of the 10-week students still continue attending their every other day classes and these grades get finalized at the end of the semester but what happened is the course title changes they're still with their state teacher but now they are working credit towards algebra biology and English 9A again you can watch this video over and over I also have it in Spanish I'm going to go over the material at orientation as well and we are our teachers will also remind students about where they should be going next. Because I know it's a lot to take it so you can if you have questions you can just disregard are the sign-in you know for now since this was for the live meeting what I also want to let parents know and students is in the fall we will have elapsed lost classes being offered their will public speaking principles of healthful living and text you later on Mondays intro to business Chicano studies on Tuesday psychology and administration of justice on Wednesdays an intro to sociology and child growth and development on Thursdays all of these classes will be online and if a student would like to start their freshman year already making one of these classes they will enroll when we start in August okay we won't enroll them yet because they're not currently our students at this moment or we can make plans are when they do start in the fall they can take one of these classes it is very official to start meal exposing yourself to college-level courses I'm not requiring anyone to take one of these courses freshman year I would ask you to some parents to reflect on are you ready will you have the time to be able to commit after school to take this course okay but I really just wanted to let you know what what those options are in the fall to allow you to plan accordingly I know some advice I have for students you know I have students that I welcome 9th grade and buy 12 grade they're very reflective about what they would want to tell their their younger I like to share that with students and one of the devices that stands really strong with me with shared with me with shared by one of my current Juniors Yesenia Yesenia said you know what I would really want Russian to know is I'm thinking your freshman year doesn't matter and she said it really does matter and you really want to get started on the right foot and the sooner you learn that the better for the long run of your high school career okay what I want to encourage students to do this to do is learn from your mistakes we know that you know transitioning from middle school to high school is it's a process and we want to be here to support you in that process you know what When You observe how do you make mistakes or you didn't use your time wisely as learned from that and figure out how can I create a better plan for myself I want to encourage students to be organized get involved in campus but simply to try your best you know when you're in class giving your attention or participating I just simply asked you to try your best with that you have any questions you can call the office you can also email me at the email that I have their Jennifer when is going to be the magnet coordinator in the fall so that's her information for the future if you have any questions in the future I will still be working with magnet as the counselor and I can support in the areas of you know scheduling and any academic concern and in terms of making sure that has when is properly enrolled in Magnet or you know just in general questions about the magnet program in the future those questions would go to mess with okay so I appreciate you guys for watching this video and checking-in you are unable to attend our May 18th meeting I look forward to meeting you all have a nice day
