Meet the Garfield High students who devoted part of their summer to a special STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) program on the campus of Cal State L.A. Instead of caps and gowns, these "graduates" got white lab coats and a good look at some possible future career paths.

it's a troubling reality compared to the right and Asian counterparts Latinos are under-represented in the fields of Benson technology but these high school students from East Los Angeles aim to Buck the trend many of them recently deciding so is very passionate about working in the lab and I love this because I was able to find more career opportunities that open more doors for me 16 outstanding Garfield High School students that graduated today from Grifols Biologicals science Summer Academy in East Los Angeles instead of wasting this summer vacation away at the beach or playing Pokemon go they spent two weeks in the classroom studying stem courses at Cal State Los list stem stands for science technology engineering and math instead of cap and gowns the students received honorary lab coats for completing challenging Hands-On microbiology course taught by Cal State LA Professor Hulen Park despite being in the top of their class at Garfield handpicked to take the course Professor Parks as many of the students lacked confidence at first they were very quiet and then they kind of look how about science and that it's a great joy for me to see them changing from the scare the small kids to being a real scientist acting researcher rta's and group leaders they helped the law and Doctor partake if we understand and we know that we couldn't we knew without being afraid that week ask them for help the students also say they began learning once they got comfortable when I got into the program I just enjoy the experiment turn the environment that it was a part of and that's what it's about already Focus is there a scientist this really is an opportunity to expose them to stem and this is great to hear that we have some individuals who made change what they're studying and doing in the future don't let any barriers or glass ceilings or artificial barriers holding back the sky's the limit for our young people shins to the reporting from East Los Angeles I'm Gil Reyes
