Course Description

  • Follows the curricular requirements outlined by the College Board; is a college-level course.
  • Focuses on building skills necessary for college-level reading, writing, and critical thinking.
  • Covers works from a variety of time periods and genres (poetry, drama, fiction, and non-fiction), as well as writing (in-class essays, formal process essays, and creative writing).
  • Builds a vocabulary of rhetorical techniques, terms of literary analysis, and critical theory.
  • Asks students to read and analyze challenging, provocative, dense, and sometimes controversial material.
  • Expects students to come to class prepared to challenge themselves and others with interesting discussion points.
  • Emphasizes building skills; success on the exam is often a happy side effect of acquiring and honing these skills.
  • Improves facility with language; skill in critical reading, writing, and thinking; and success in academic endeavors.
