Mariachi Los Alanos de Garfield High School. First established in 1991 by Dr. David Kilpatrick, the program went through various Directors and about 9 years ago was in hiatus. In 2019 the program was revived under my directorship. When I took over we started as a group of 6 and it quickly grew in popularity and has now reached membership of over 35 students. Currently, we have 50 students in the program and have 3 ensembles: Mariachi Los Alanitos (Junior Varsity), Mariachi Las Mariposas (all-female), Mariachi Los Alanos (Varsity).
In our short time, Mariachi Los Alanos "El Orgullo del Este de Los Angeles," has grown in popularity and has represented the community of East Los Angeles at events such as Mariachi USA at the Hollywood Bowl, the Mariachi Conference at the University of San Diego, the Santa Cecilia Mariachi Festival in Boyle Heights, UC Berkeley Mariachi Conference and Mariachi conference at Princeton University. We are also the reigning back to back champions for the CABE mariachi competition. Membership is open to all students with experience. Interested students should contact Mr. Gonzalez at
[email protected] or stop by the mariachi class (510) before school or in the village MC2.
