AUTISM AWARENESS MONTH

AUTISM AWARENESS MONTH
Autism Awareness Month is celebrated globally. In support and recognition of students with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD), the District promotes awareness of ASD during the month of April and provides an opportunity for educators, students, and parents to learn more about autism. This document/memorandum provides ideas for school-site activities and information that can be shared with families and the community.

This year’s theme for Autism Awareness Month is Helping the Pieces Fit

The theme encourages schools to take part in fostering autism awareness to promote understanding and acceptance for individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorders on their campus and surrounding communities. It also encourages schools to celebrate the diversity and unique contributions individuals with autism make to all campuses. Participating schools can share the unique ways they are promoting autism awareness and Helping the Pieces Fit on their campuses. Participating schools will have an opportunity to be highlighted on Schoology and in an upcoming Division of Special Education Newsletter and Spotlight.

Schools are encouraged to participate in autism awareness activities during the month of April. Ideas for activities are provided in the “Related Resources” section of the Memorandum and in Attachment A: Ideas to Promote Autism Awareness.
In addition, graphics are available for posting (Attachment C: Autism Awareness Graphics and Attachment D: Helping the Pieces Fit Autism Poster).
