October 29, 2025
Dear Parents/Guardians,
I want to remind families that academic success begins with your child attending school every day. This year, October 31, 2025, falls on a Friday, All Saints Day is Saturday, November 1, and Día de los Muertos is Sunday, November 2, 2025; therefore, it is important that students not only come to school on these days, but every day, to experience the enriching lessons and school activities that have been planned for them. Studies show that it takes students one week to catch up on what they missed from one day of missed instruction.
At Garfield High School (GHS), our goal is that students have no more than seven absences during the school year. We also ask that all students work on improving their attendance by making it to class on time and attending all classes. Remember, the goal for students is to have no more than seven absences in the school year and to work on improving their attendance each day.
The following activities have been planned to support our school and community:
Our GHS PBIS and Wellness Committee will sponsor a costume contest during lunch on October 31st. Each participant will receive a treat, and the winners will receive prizes. Please adhere to the following guidelines:
- Costumes shall not be demeaning to any person or group based on age, disability, ethnicity, gender, gender identity, nationality, race, religion, sex, sexual orientation, or to any individual staff or student at the school.
- Costumes must comply with the dress code restriction against images that are “vulgar, sexually suggestive, discriminatory, obscene, libelous, contain threats, or that promote illegal or violent content such as the unlawful use of weapons, drugs, alcohol, tobacco, or drug paraphernalia” (BUL-6494.0) or cause a significant disruption or distraction to the school program.
- No weapons or replica weapons are to be brought to school.
- No masks.
- No costume can be worn that is unsafe or that may create a safety hazard. Costumes may not impair a student’s vision or movement (e.g., ability to climb stairs).
The GHS PBIS and Wellness Committee is committed to creating and fostering a climate of respect and acceptance among all stakeholders before, during, and after this event. The LAUSD Bulletin 5982.2 (dated September 26, 2016) regarding Halloween guidelines will be strictly enforced.
Thank you for all you do to make Garfield High School an incredible school for your child!
Sincerely,
Regina Marquez-Martinez
