The assignment:

Propose a School Code of Conduct for Garfield High School that will take into
consideration what you have learned about bullying from your reading and research.

 

Your audience will be the School Board, a group of parents, teachers, and administrators who govern school policy. You and Mr. Patacsil may present your proposal to District Officials, so not only will you need to be accurate about your evidence, but you will also have to consider the needs of Garfield and the beliefs and values of the LAUSD. Your class may design your own format for this assignment, but a successful proposal could include the following:

 

The final assignment will include an individual research essay (3-4 pages) and a whole class proposal (binder, powerpoint, (PSA) Public Service Announcement (video), etc.)

III. Evidence that illustrates that bullying is a problem in schools
IV. Evidence that illustrates that bullying is a problem in your school
V. Why your school needs a Code of Conduct
VI. The proposed School Code of Conduct
VII. Conclusion

1. How bullying is defined (language)
2. The nature of the problem of bullying (details)
3. The characteristics of victims and of bullies, if given (rules, patterns)
4. The solutions offered to the “problem” of bullying (contributions, convergence)
5. The opinions of your group about any of these (multiple perspectives)
