WOMEN AND THE GREAT WAR
Women were mobilized in unparalleled numbers in every nation involved in World War I. The huge majority of women were directed into the civilian work force to replace conscripted men or work in the exceedingly enlarged munitions factories. Thousands also enlisted and served in the military in a vast array of support roles such as nurses, drivers, interpreters, bilingual telephone operators, stenographers and other positions. However, in Russia some women were directly involved in combat.
