Assignment

During out shoots, you are expected to work as a group to make all your planning into reality.

On set, you should be working professionally as a cooperative group in order to get your planned shots creatively and effeciently.   At the end of each shooting day, you should fill out a production report to show how much you got done and how well you met your goals.  This will also help you to plan any additional shoots you may need.

This is a 100 pt. particiaption and classwork grade.

If you are not shooting, you are expected to observe the group shooting quietly, help as needed, and/or work on planning your next shoot.

Production Book:  100 point test grade

If you do all the other assignments, this should be easy.  I will check your production books periodically throughout all three stages of production.

In your book, you should have all your completed paperwork (from the script through post-production logs) filed in a folder or notebook in order of completion.  Each group will have a file folder in the classroom where you may store and file all your paperwork.  I suggest you use the folder and only bring home papers you need to complete for homework.

Mise en scene analysis:
How the elements of a shot create meaning

Over the last few weeks you were taught to interpret how, manipulating mise en scene, directors convey meaning through visuals as well as dialogue and plot.  Now, you will use this analysis method to analyze one scene from one of the movies we saw this semester (Citizen Kane, Casablanca, The Pursuit of Happyness, or Vertigo).

Your paper must include, and will be graded, on the following:

•    An introduction and conclusion
•    A strong and clear thesis statement that clearly states an opinion based on the details of a specific scene.  The thesis statement should CLEARLY state which elements you will analyze in the body paragraphs and how you interpret the overall meaning.
•    There must be at least 2 body paragraphs that each supports the thesis statement.  Each paragraph should discuss one element named in your thesis, give evidence of this from the scene/shot, and provide an interpretation of what this element means based on the context of the shot/scene within the movie.
•    At least 2 of the following aspects of the film must be discussed: Camera angle, lighting, body positions, objects, sound, pacing.
•    Use class standards for formatting your paper, which MUST BE TYPED!

Tools to use:
•    Class notes
•    Psycho scene analysis sample
•    Citizen Kane shot analysis sample (cannot use this shot for your paper) from the study packet for Citizen Kane.
•    Participate in class work as we go through the steps to prepare for the paper and be prepared with assignments each day.
•    Make an appointment with Ms. Cheby during lunch or nutrition if you have additional questions.
•    Have confidence!  Look at the scene, describe what you see and think about what it means, what it is ‘telling’ you, the viewer!
