One of Scotland's smallest inhabited islands, its history is enormous. It was here that St. Columba founded his monastery(563 AD), a real influence in the spread of Christianity. Iona was also known as the home of the "Stone of Destiny" (king's throne) until Viking raiders ransacked the monastery around 800 AD. About 850 AD, the Stone of Destiny was moved to Scone. Much of the medieval architecture is still in view.
