Coach Ruben Torres » Home

Coach Ruben Torres has been at the helm of the Bulldogs since the 2006 season. In his first year he led the Bulldogs to a 18-14-1 overall record and 11-7 in league record, good for third place. The Bulldogs were coming of a fifth place season that saw them finish 11-19 overall and 3-12 in league play.
In his first season at the helm, the Bulldogs entered as the 4th seed in the Invitational division of the playoffs. After beating Marshall High 4-3 in the first round and Hollywood High 6-2 in the quarterfinals, they lost a hard fought game in the semi-finals to eventual Invitational Champion Birmingham High 3-1.
In his second season the Bulldogs finished with a similar record going 18-14 but improving it's league record to 12-6. The Bulldogs were chosen as the 15th seed in the City and participated in the Championship division of the playoffs. The Bulldogs lost to eventual Champion Chatsworth High in the first round. It was the first time the Bulldogs had been in the Championship division of the playoffs since the format was implemented.
During his third year, the bulldogs finished the year 13-15 and 10-8 in league, on game away from second place. The Bulldogs had many great wins over teams like Palisades and Roosevelt which qualified to the top division of the playoffs and Carson, a high seed in the Invitational bracket. At the end the Bulldogs were snubbed from playoff competition.
In his fourth season, Coach Torres lead the Bulldogs to their first league title in 13 years. The Bulldogs finished with a 13-5 league record and 18-12 record overall after a very tough non-league schedule that saw the Bulldogs beat CIF powerhouse Los Alamitos High and arch rival Roosevelt High twice. This was good enough to get the Bulldogs a #8 seed in the newly realigned Division I playoff bracket. The Bulldogs hosted #9 seed San Pedro High in the first round and beat them 7-3 to advance. In the quarterfinals the Bulldogs visited the #1 seed Cleveland High. Facing their ace pitcher, the Bulldogs were outscored 9-6 for the final score, caping off one of the better seasons in school history with much hard word from all it's players and Coach Torres' coaching staff.
Coach Torres was a four year letterman and three year starter at Cal Lutheran University. He helped lead the Kingsmen to a Western Region Championship and a runner-up National Championship his junior year as a shortstop. After graduating in 1997 with a Bachelors Degree in Psychology, Coach Torres played semi-professional baseball in Mexico before joining the Algodoneros of Union Laguna of the Liga Mexicana for a brief stint.
Coach Torres is a 1993 graduate of Oxnard High School where he was a starter for their baseball and soccer teams.
