What is AVID

AVID is a fourth- through twelfth-grade system to prepare students in the academic middle for four-year college eligibility. It has a proven track record in bringing out the best in students, and in closing the achievement gap. AVID stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination.

AVID targets students in the academic middle — B, C, and even D students — who have the desire to go to college and the willingness to work hard. These are students who are capable of completing rigorous curriculum but are falling short of their potential. Typically, they will be the first in their families to attend college, and many are from low-income or minority families. AVID pulls these students out of their unchallenging courses and puts them on the college track: acceleration instead of remediation.

A Typical Week in AVID

Mondays

Tuesdays

Wednesdays

Thursdays

Fridays

Binder Checks

* It is very critical that students know how to be organized in order to excel in higher education.

** This component makes up a good percentage of the students’ overall grade

Tutorials

* Students are asked to bring questions they don’t quite understand how to solve. For the most part the subject most discussed is Math. However, it is asked that the students focus on their weakest subjects so that they can become more well-rounded for college applications

Socratic Seminar

* One of the major differences between college and high school level work is the higher level of thinking students are required to obtain. Thus, it is important that we start implementing critical thinking skills to help students not only grasp the curriculum but think critically.

**Socratic seminars are taken from the Greek philosopher Socrates.

Tutorials

* The AVID program is structured around the middle range students meaning, when our students enter our program they are not straight A students; However, they have the potential to excel in education.

** This is why Tutorials are implemented twice a week. To help the students.

Writing/ Math activities and/or Fun Fridays

* The two most important subjects in high school education are English and Math. In AVID we try to create activities that will not only teach the students a little more about these two important subjects but also, create a fun environment for students to collaborate with other classmates.

** If class was great all week, Fun Fridays are to be expected. This helps the students relax and understand how hard they have worked all week long.

Parent Involvement

In order for this program to succeed and continue to grow we are in need of parent involvement. The success of a student can only go so far if the parents are not involved with the education of the student. It is essential that parents know what their children are doing in school and what they must do at home.

As part of the program we try to give the students the opportunity to explore colleges and universities and go on educational field trips. However, we need the help and support from the parents in fundraising activities, and school events.
