Marching Band/Advanced Band 

Students will develop the qualities needed to perform on their instrument in public performance

  • Students will develop the qualities needed to perform on their instrument in public performance
  • Music Fundamentals; Music Theory; Clefs, Keys and Scales, Intervals, Chords, Species Counterpoint
  • Melodic and Rhythmic Pattern Reading
  • Ear Training and Solfege Singing
  • Music Improvisation, Transcription, and Composition
  • Solo, Small Group, and Large Ensemble Performance
 
Modern Band
  • This course is designed to provide high school students with the opportunity to learn how to perform and create music with an acoustic guitar and ukulele.
  • Students will also have opportunities to create, edit, mix, and master music online as well as study music history and music theory

The Garfield High School Band is one of the oldest and most decorated bands in Los Angeles with documented performances going back to the 1920’s. The band is a 5-time LAUSD Band and Drill Team Championship Winner and has a long tradition of excellence and has consistently received high ratings or awards at many festivals and competitions over the years as well as performing in events in Mexico City, the Rose Parade, and the Hollywood Christmas Parade.

Mr. Bailey has been teaching instrumental music at Garfield High School in East Los Angeles, CA since 2015 and for the last twenty-five years has taught music at all levels as well as working as a teacher trainer at CSU-Fullerton and was a visiting artist in the Cal Arts Experimental Animation department. Over the years his groups have been active performing for many competitions, festivals, and community events throughout Los Angeles. In 1998 the John Marshall High School Band performing and recording with the all-girl  punk band “L7” in which the resulting recording was used as the opening track on their 1998 “Live from Osaka-Omaha Album”


Mr. Bailey has also has been active leading his own band as a Composer and Performer whose four albums of music has been performed throughout SoCal, positively reviewed in many newspapers (Los Angeles Times and the OC and LA Weekly), and has been featured with both accolades and heavy rotation on John Schaffer’s New Sounds Radio Show. (WNYC). He has earned his Bachelor of the Arts in Music Education and Masters of Music in Music Composition from CSUF
